To counter the German submarine threat, that was causing havoc among the merchant fleet, the Admiralty ordered the building and operation of a number of ‘SS’ airships which would spot submarines and report theirnposition to surface ships. The ‘SS’ stands for ‘submarine scout’ or ‘sea scout’.

On 12th September, 1917, one of these airships, the SS 42A based at Pembroke, crashed into some farm buildings and ended up in the sea when making a night landing. The crew of two, one of whom was John Cripps, were unable to abandon the airship which drifted out to sea in the direction of Carmarthen Bay before coming to grief near Bull Point. Neither of them  survived.
